From the People Who've Been Through It

RZ

Roslan Zainudin

Petaling Jaya Β· Budgeting Mastery

"I've been earning a decent income for years but never really knew where it went each month. The zero-based budgeting session was the one that clicked for me. I spent the second session building my own budget spreadsheet from scratch β€” it was frustrating in a good way, and now I actually use it."

Lim Wei Ying

Kuala Lumpur Β· Retirement Planning

"I'm 38 and had been putting off thinking about retirement properly because it felt overwhelming. Kok Leong was very good at breaking the numbers down into something manageable. The session on PRS was particularly useful β€” I had vague ideas about it but never understood how it fits alongside EPF in practice."

Nurul Aida Kamarudin

Shah Alam Β· Entrepreneur Finance

"Running a small bakery for three years without understanding my own P&L statements was something I was honestly embarrassed to admit. Izzati had a way of explaining it that didn't make me feel judged. By the end of day two I could read my accounts properly for the first time."

Tan Hui Fen

Cheras Β· Budgeting Mastery

"My husband and I attended together. The fact that couples could both join at the single price was the reason we decided to try it. It helped a lot to work on the same budget side by side β€” we discovered some areas where our assumptions about each other's spending were quite different."

Amirul Rashid

Mont Kiara Β· Entrepreneur Finance

"The two-day format felt intensive going in, but there was enough variety in the activities that it didn't drag. The session on working with accountants was the one I hadn't expected to find as useful as I did β€” it changed how I approach those conversations. Would consider attending again if a more advanced level is ever offered."

Priya Velayutham

Subang Jaya Β· Retirement Planning

"I wanted something more structured than reading articles online, and this was it. The fortnightly format helped β€” there was time between sessions to think about what had come up and come back with better questions. Kok Leong was thorough and patient. The healthcare cost estimation session was something I hadn't seen covered anywhere else."

In More Depth

A Few Participant Journeys

Some participants have shared more about what changed after completing a course. These are their accounts.

The Starting Point

A freelance graphic designer in KL was earning variably each month β€” some months significantly more than others β€” and had no consistent way of managing money across lean periods. Savings existed but were being depleted when work was slow.

What Changed

After completing the Budgeting Mastery course, she built a smoothing approach β€” calculating her average monthly income over the past year and budgeting based on that figure. Higher-income months now flow into a buffer account rather than creating an impression of extra spending room.

The Outcome

Eight months later, she had cleared a car loan earlier than the schedule called for and started making voluntary EPF contributions. Her main comment at follow-up: "I stopped spending my slow months worrying about money."

"The variable income session was the most relevant thing for me. I'd always felt like budgeting advice wasn't quite designed for someone whose income changes every month."

The Starting Point

A 46-year-old operations manager had been contributing to EPF for over 20 years and assumed it would cover retirement adequately. A colleague's early retirement raised questions he hadn't considered: what would he actually need monthly, and was what he had on track?

What Changed

The Retirement Planning course helped him run a structured estimate of his likely EPF payout versus his estimated monthly expenses at retirement. The gap was smaller than he'd feared, but still significant. He opened a PRS account and started redirecting part of his annual bonus there.

The Outcome

He described the main benefit as clarity β€” not that the numbers were comfortable, but that he understood them clearly enough to make real decisions. He attended with his wife at the next intake so they could plan together.

"I spent years avoiding this topic because I thought the answer would be that I'd been doing it all wrong. As it turned out, I hadn't been β€” but I did have a gap that needed addressing, and now I'm actually addressing it."
